Sticky ice

After learning all about ice and what happens to ice over time, the children were set a challenge. The challenge was to pick up a piece of ice from a bowl of water by only using a piece of string...of course they all thought they would be able to do it! I love their confidence and enthusiasm. After a few goes the children realised that it was a lot harder than they thought so we revisited what we’d already learnt about ice and started to think of ways to melt the ice a little and let it freeze again.
Someone suggested using salt to melt it and change its shape a little and the ice cold water would help the ice stick to the string!
The results were amazing, just look at their faces!
