The Polar Express Arrives in the Kestrel Class
Date: 20th Dec 2016 @ 11:41am
As Christmas Day falls at the end of this week, we felt we should enjoy this exciting time by learning through the book and film, ''Polar Express'.
We began the week by guessing which Christmas themed book we would be studying - there were lots of ideas! A clue appeared on Monday in the form a train track. On Tuesday we all came into school in pyjamas, excitement building, as we shared our thoughts about the 'mystery' book. We created a blanket of snow around the classroom with sentences using embedded clauses to describe a view from a bedroom on Christmas Eve. With the classroom covered in snow, we then set off on the Polar Express. The children listened intently to the classic book and were mesmerised by the detailed pictures.
Thr children returned from breaktime to find their classroom had become the Polar Express. The bell rang and the conductor cried, 'All aboard!' As the children found the seats, they were challenged with also finding their ticket to board. After a little searching, each child found a golden ticket to board and they sat comfortably as the conductor (Mr Harley) stamped their tickets. Whilst the children became engrossed in the film, Mrs Huxtable and Mrs Corlett served hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows and, of course, a cookie.
We plan to create some poems and a mini-play, which we will share with KS1 later in the week. What a wonderfully exciting week!
